First Nations sign treaty opposing fossil fuels development

North American First Nations tribes have signed a treaty stating their opposition to the expansion of tar sands pipelines.

The head of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs says the development around fossil fuels is irresponsible.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip says if governments don’t co-operate, the expansion of the industry will spark major protests that could force construction to stop.

The Treaty Alliance Against Tar Sands Expansion includes 50 tribes from across the continent who are committed fighting against five major pipeline proposals, tanker expansions and rail projects related to the industry.
