Former head of Haida Dental Project being sued by Canada’s Attorney General

The federal government is suing UBC and a former associate dean of the faculty of dentistry over allegations it misused millions in government funds.

A lawsuit filed in BC Supreme Court alleges the university got $10.6 million from Health Canada between 2002 and 2013 to provide dental services to First Nations residents on Haida Gwaii through the Haida Dental Project in Skidegate and Old Massett Village.

A statement of claim alleges that only $7.3 million was actually used to run the two clinics, meaning UBC overbilled Health Canada by $3.3 million.

The suit alleges Doctor Christopher Zed abused his position by fraudulently transferring millions of dollars — including $1.2 million to his personal bank account and $2 million in credit card payments to non-UBC accounts.
