Declining student numbers are forcing the Nechako Lakes School District to take a hard look at operations in Fort St. James and Fort Fraser/Fraser Lake areas, including the possibility of school closures.
The school board says Fort St. James has seen K-12 enrollment drop from 900 students in 2000/2001 to 594 students this year. In the Fort Fraser/Fraser Lake area, student numbers have gone from 664 in 2000/2001 to 464 in 2014/2015.
The District 91 Board of Education says it will make an announcement about what the potential reconfiguration and closures may look like at its April 20th meeting.
There will be a minimum 60-day consultation period, including meetings in all impacted communities.
The board says it expects to make a decision on any potential closures or changes at its June 22nd meeting.
