French Immersion staying as is at Coast Mountains School District

The French Immersion program at Coast Mountains School District is staying the same, for now.

The board had a motion defeated by a tie to adopt a recommendation to cut the program in Hazelton at grade 7 and Kitimat at grade 9. Terrace’s program would’ve remained untouched.

Hazelton Canadian Parents for French chapter’s Jocelyn Chandler says she’s relieved the program is not being cut and that they’re going to work the the district more closely to ensure French Immersion remains a viable option.

Francophone Association of North Western BC’s Patrick Witwicki says the process taught many parents not to take programs for granted.

Grade 11 Kitimat student Lyndsay Silvestre presented a letter from students who take French Immersion to the board. She says it’s important to think of students before pulling the trigger on decisions.

The board also decided to have senior staff look more into live stream classes to different towns and ways to get more funding for the program.
