In an effort to avoid further confrontation with RCMP, Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs say members will abide by a BC Supreme Court injunction to allow Coastal GasLink crews to cross the Morice River Bridge.
According to a statement posted to the Unist’ot’en camp’s Facebook page Wednesday, Chiefs are continuing to negotiate terms which may allow them to keep their main gate up.
Chief Na’moks (John Ridsdale) told those gathered at the nearby Unist’ot’en healing centre that safety was the primary concern of the Wet’suwet’en chiefs in their decision to comply with officers, fearing that further enforcement could lead to serious harm.
Members say the Unist’ot’en camp has been vandalized in the past, making maintaining the main gate a key negotiation point in discussions set to take place between RCMP and chiefs Thursday.
Chief Na’moks says the tentative agreement with RCMP in no way means that the Wet’suwet’en have acquiesced to Coastal GasLink.
