Sockeye is now open on the Skeena for the Gitksan first nation members.
The FSC Fishery has opened Sockeye fishing with a limit of 30,000 fish for the entire watershed from the headwaters to the coast.
Officials say is it CRITICAL that community members report their catches to the Lands and Resources Office or a Fishery Monitor to keep a close track of the numbers.
With this, the use of less than 7-inch grill nets will be permitted within the Gitksan territories beginning from 6 am Sunday, August 6th, ending 10 pm Thursday, August 12th.
On August 13th, the Gitksan will return to use the 7-inch or greater mesh size only.
The fishery estimates the run size as of August first to be a return of approximately 630,000 Sockeye.
