The occupation of the Gitwangak Band office has ended with a court-ordered injunction.
Supporters of the Gitwangak Education Society had occupied the band’s boardroom since mid-December to protest the band’s takeover of the society.
In a released statement, Chief Councillor Frederick Johnson says it’s unfortunate they had to resort to court action, adding the band council will continue to work in the best interest of the community.
Anita Davis says they’ll obey the injunction, she’s a Gitwangak hereditary chief and one of the organizers.
She says they’ll hold a meeting to decide their next step, including plans for the upcoming band council election in May.
The Gitwangak Education Society provides education services to the band, conflict arose when the band council took over management of the society last year.
