Three volcanoes are containe din the area in question, rising to just 24 metres below the ocean surface.
Though the area is of significant cultural importance to the Haida Nation, it is currently only classified as a “voluntary exclusion zone”.
The area has been co-managed by the DFO since 2008, but Haida Nation President Peter Lantin says that there’s just too much traffic through the area.
In Haida tradition, the area is home to a supernatural being told of in their oral tradition.
