Haida teams to hold a silent protest at ANT over LNG sponsorship

The Skidegate Saints will be attending this year’s All Native Basketball Tournament, but with reservations.

The team has issued an open letter to the ANBT Committee expressing their concerns over LNG companies sponsoring the tournament.

Saint’s captain, Jason Alsop says he unsuccessfully tried to work with the committee to find alternative funding solutions.

He says the Saints, as well as all the Haida teams, plan on wearing t-shirts in a silent protest to express their opposition to LNG, but it’s unclear if that will lead to sanctions from the ANBT Committee.

Alsop says the committee has said they have concerns of disruptive behavior in the venue, and during the cultural components of the tournament, but he says those concerns are unfounded.

He adds his team will be donating their tournament per diem to the Pacific NorthWest LNG protesters at the Lelu Island camp.
