A Northwest area First Nation is backing a bid by an Indigenous post-secondary school to come to Kitimat.
The Haisla Nation Council has invited Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) to establish a northern campus at Kitimat Valley Institute.
The NVIT campus would expand the number of post-secondary courses available as well as additional trades training with its partnership with BCIT.
Haisla Chief Councillor Crystal Smith says there will be a significant need for Indigenous-focused training in the region to prepare workers for jobs with the LNG Canada liquefied natural gas project.
The Haisla Nation Council says it is “very supportive” of NVIT’s request to the Ministry of Advanced Education for core funding for the campus.
NVIT currently runs two programs through Kitimat Valley Institute.
