The Haisla Nation and the BC Oil and Gas Commission announced a joint program today.
The Haisla Nation Natural Resource Sector Aboriginal Liaison Program was formed as part of the commission’s push to encourage greater awareness of the oil and gas industry in First Nations communities.
Haisla Chief Councillor Ellis Ross says the program will give the Haisla a stronger hand to ensure any project being developed on their territory is done so responsibly.
Adding Haisla people will be out in the field to make sure the projects live up to their promises.
The BC Oil and Gas Commission started the liaison program and provides knowledgeable, trained and properly equipped people for First Nations communities.
A pilot program was successfully initiated last May, in partnership with the Doig River First Nation in northeast BC.
The Commission is currently working to see if similar agreements can be arranged with other First Nations.
