After four decades of service, the Hazelton’s arena is shutting down.
A structural engineer determined a roof beam was in danger of falling onto the ice.
Vivienne Spooner is the President of the Skeena Ice Area.
She says that the roof has deteriorated to the point where a strong wind could cause it to collapse.
There will be a meeting to determine how to raise funds for a new arena.
Through prior fund-raising, $4 million has already been raised, but another $8 million is needed.
Spooner says the biggest disappointment is that programs have just begun to run smoothly will have to stop.
She says they will also be looking for funding to properly dismantle the old arena before it collapses.
