Last month’s closure of the Hazelton’s arena left the regions communities without a vital recreation centre.
But there’s now a glimmer of hope.
The Heart of the Hazeltons’ project, also known as the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre is a two-phase initiative to build a recreation centre to be completed by 2017.
Northern Development will grant $250,000 to build the new centre, which will be at the same site as the old arena.
The project still requires additional funding, and once that has been secured, construction is expected to begin next spring.
New Hazelton Mayor, Gail Lowry says she hopes corporate sponsors will help fill the funding gap.
They currently have approximately $3-million but need about $15-million for the entire project.
