Heiltsuk Chief Councillor ‘deeply concerned’ about the tug boat and fuel barge that ran aground

Heiltsuk Chief Councillor Marylin Slett is deeply concerned about a tug boat and fuel barge that ran aground near Bella Bella this morning.

She says Heiltsuk has sent out their resources to the scene and is calling on all agencies to clean and contain the diesel leaking from the tug boat as fast as they can.

The tug boat is under water while the barge remains stable.

The tug had a load of approximately 50,000 gallons of diesel at the start of the voyage.

The Coast Guard says the tug boat and empty fuel barge became aground around 1:00am Thursday on the Edge Reef in the Seaforth Channel.

Texas based Kirby Offshore Marine owns the tug and barge and says they regret the incident and are working with all agencies to contain the spill.

Seven people were on board at the time and are now safe.

The Western Canada Marine Response Corporation says they also have a number of resources deployed to clean up the spill with more resources due to arrive Thursday evening.

The Coast Guard says divers will also attend to help contain the leak.
