Members of the Heiltsuk Nation have occupied a Department of Fisheries and Oceans field office.
They have set up camp outside the office on Denny Island, across from Bella Bella.
Marilyn Slett, the Chief Councillor Heiltsuk Tribal Council, along with her colleague Kelly Brown, have occupied the interior of the DFO office.
Slett says DFO’s regional manager is on her way to the office to discuss a potential resolution to the occupation, but the relationship between the two have been severely damaged.
She says the Heiltsuk Nation isn’t against a herring fishery, but they won’t risk collapsing the herring stocks.
Slett says community support for their actions has been overwhelming.
