A documentary about the Highway of Tears will be screened in Vancouver on March 8th, International Women’s Day.
The film covers the many missing and murdered women along BC’s northern highways.
Director and producer, Matthew Smiley says he was drawn to the story after speaking to family members of the missing women.
He says he felt compelled to help them find answers and seek some measure of closure.
As an outsider, it was initially hard to gain the trust of the families involved.
Beyond simply getting recognition for what’s happened on the Highway of Tears, Smiley hopes his film will spur action and dialogue.
Ultimately, Smiley wants his film to have a message of hope, despite the grim story.
Smiley says there will be screenings throughout northern BC.
The film will eventually be released on DVD and streaming services.
