BC’s Independent Investogations Office confirms that it will perform a full investigation of a Valentine’s Day police incident in Smithers.
The IIO says Smithers Mounties were called to a home at 10:30 p.m. February 14th where they found a man who appeared distraught, in emotional distress, and would not obey police commands.
RCMP used pepper spray in arresting the man and he became unconscious almost immediately. The man was taken to hospital by Emergency Health Services where he remains.
The independent investigations office was notified just after midnight Sunday February 15th and arrived in Smithers Wednesday.
The IIO says its team has conducted multiple interviews.
Investigators will likely back in the Lower Mainland sometime today.
The office says there won’t likely be any forthcoming updates unless the condition of the man in hospital changes.
