BC’s police watchdog says the complex nature an in-custody death in the Cariboo makes it difficult to provide a timeline about jurisdiction.
The Independent Investigations Office was called to Quesnel Tuesday, March 3 after the death of a woman who had been arrested by RCMP.
RCMP say the woman was the victim of an alleged assault early Sunday, October 1, but she was arrested when police found she was in breach of a court-imposed condition.
She was examined by paramedics at the Quesnel detachment who recommended she be taken to local hospital. From there, she was transported to a larger hospital for treatment, but died October 2.
The IIO says its initial focus is to determine whether there is a connection between the female’s death and the actions of police. The IIO will only retain jurisdiction if a connection is found, but it’s not clear when that determination will be made.
Quesnel RCMP are continuing to investigate the assault complaint and have arrested two people in connection with the incident.
Any potential witnesses to the incident should contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
