Kitimat residents will get more time to have their say on a bylaw to ban riverbank camping within district boundaries.
Council adjourned the public meeting in order to consult with the Haisla Nation before voting on the bylaw.
Monday’s public hearing heard from residents like local businessman and fishing guide Ron Wakita, who says banning riverbank camping would hurt tourism and local users alike.
Others, like Mary Coles, expressed concern about the impact river campers are having in the area and fish.
A member of the Haisla Nation spoke out against the ban, but asked that council consider an exemption for the Haisla, noting that the Nation has returned to the Kitimat River to fish after years of being unable to because of pollution.
Council voted to adjourn the meeting to 6:30 April 30 in order to provide time to sit down with the Haisla Nation to discuss the bylaw’s implications.
