During a special meeting held on Sunday, Kitimat Council voted unanimously to register as an intervener in the Coastal GasLink Pipeline jurisdictional challenge.
Earlier in the month, the National Energy Board agreed to hear a challenge issued by Smithers resident Michael Sawyer.
Sawyer believes the pipeline should be considered federal jurisdiction rather than provincial, which would then require an NEB review.
As an intervener, Kitimat Council would be able to ensure the community has their voices heard, should the NEB move forward with the challenge.
Council hopes to hear back regarding their application’s status within a few weeks.
