Kitimat may be a small town, but it also has its own play.
Playwright Elaine Avila has written a play about Kitimat that takes place during the plebiscite over Enbridge’s Northern Gateway project.
In the play, two sisters are on opposite sides of the plebiscite.
While the family conflict is at the core of the story, the larger conflict is about how a community decides the types of development that it wants.
She says while the play is specific to Kitimat, the issues are common around the world.
Avila says she was first drawn to Kitimat because of the large Portuguese community, and because many of them immigrated from the Azores, which is where her family is from.
She says she’s currently looking into bringing the play to the north.
