The on-going labour dispute in Kitimat has no end in sight.
Last week, the City of Kitimat issued a statement saying its previous final offer was once again open for acceptance with a deadline of yesterday afternoon.
The statement also says if the offer is rejected, all previous signed off items are withdrawn and the City will bring in an external negotiator to re-negotiate all issues.
Mayor Phil Germuth says starting negotiations from scratch makes sense given the previous offer was rejected multiple times.
Martin McIlwrath of Unifor 2300 says the City’s ultimatum makes no sense and shows bad faith.
Unifor 2300 has applied for a mediator to take up the outstanding issues, rather than re-start negotiations with a new negotiator.
Mayor Germuth says the City is considering both options and will have a response within a few days.
Both sides claim they have support from the public, and that public opinion is with them.
