Some establishments in and around Kitimat’s City Centre Mall were back in business Monday afternoon, but it will be back to a blackout Tuesday.
BC Hydro was able to temporarily restore electricity to some mall outlets as well as the nearby Tim Horton’s, Shoppers Drug Mart, A&W and No Frills grocery store. However, the power will be cut once again Tuesday morning as crews replace a transformer that failed Sunday.
Hydro’s Community Relations Manager for the north Bob Gammer says a replacement transformer and a specialized confined space crew are scheduled to arrive in Kitimat Monday night. Gammer says the crew will assess the damaged transformer located in an underground vault on mall property and make final plans for replacement.
BC Hydro says work is scheduled to commence at 7 AM Tuesday which will require a complete power outage at the mall and surrounding businesses for approximately 12 hours. Gammer says the best case scenario is a full restoration of power by Tuesday night. Otherwise, he says electricity will be back Wednesday.
