The District of Kitimat says its unionized workers began picketing municipal buildings over the weekend.
The members of Unifor Local 2300 were in a legal strike position shortly before noon Saturday.
The district says Riverlodge Recreation Centre, Tamitik Arena/Kitimat Ice Rink, and Sam Lindsay Aquatic Centre are closed as a result of job action. It says the Kitimat Municipal Office and Public Works yard may be behind picket lines.
The District of Kitimat says building inspection services will not be available during the strike, but the landfill will be open and garbage collection will continue on its regular schedule.
RCMP, Fire Department, and BC Ambulance services will remain operational as well.
The District of Kitimat says it remains committed to reaching an agreement with Unifor Local 2300 but says the union’s current demands would result in a 12 per cent property tax hike.
