Kitimat preparing for possible strike action

Kitimat is preparing residents for possible job action by district employees.

Workers represented by Unifor Local 2300 have served strike notice and will be in a legal strike position effective Saturday, February 28th at 11:55 a.m.

The district says job action will have a big impact on municipal operations, starting with the shutdown of the Kitimat Ice Arena, Tamitik Arena, and Sam Lindsay Memorial Pool.

The community’s landfill and garbage collection will continue during strike action.

RCMP, Fire Department, and BC Ambulance services will also remain operational.

Unifor says its members will not walk off the job if negotiations are continuing and progress is being made.

District of Kitimat says shutdown procedures at the arenas and pool will start at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 26th to ensure that enough time is allotted for proper shutdown procedures at the facilities.
