Kitimat RCMP say telephone tax scam on the rise

Kitimat RCMP are reporting a rise in people complaining about tax scams.

Police say they’ve received reports of people getting a call from someone claiming to be a police officer, who then threatens them with arrest for not paying their taxes.

The RCMP stress the phone calls are fake, and it is not a police officer on the other end.

Scammers may be taking advantage of the upcoming tax filing deadline.

Police encourage people to report attempted frauds to Fraud Busters at 1-888-495-8501.
