The District of Kitimat won’t be calling on the province to have sulphur dioxide scrubbers installed at Rio Tinto’s aluminum smelter.
Mayor Phil Germuth introduced a motion at a special council meeting Monday that would’ve advised the environment ministry of the District’s desire to have SO2 scrubbers installed at the smelter once its emissions permit came up for renewal.
Councillor Rob Goffinet was concerned about the wording of the motion.
In the end, the motion was defeated by a vote of 4-3, although it’s not likely the end of the debate over increased sulphur dioxide emissions from the Rio Tinto smelter.
