Members of various Indigenous bands came together yesterday in support of a Tsimshian woman being denied citizenship.
Mique’l Dangeli, whose story gained acclaim after being featured in a CBC interview, is a Sm’algyax teacher in Kitsumkalum.
Dangeli was denied citizenship, despite being Indigenous and highly educated, due to an English exam she had not taken.
Dangeli, along with her husband and fellow Indigenous community members, has put together a petition based around reciprocating the Jay Treaty, which would have the citizenship of First Nations recognized across US- Canada borders.
