The Lax Kw’alaams Band says it means business when it comes to protecting Flora Bank and Lelu Island.
The band issued a news release Monday stating it stands united against the proposed Pacific NorthWest LNG project in its current design.
Lax Kw’alaams Mayor Garry Reece says community members are worried that the massive liquefied natural gas project would irreparably harm salmon stocks on the Skeena River as the fish rely on Flora Bank for critical stages in their development.
Reece says the band’s title claim for Flora Bank and Lelu Island is not about posturing for negotiations but aimed at protecting their sea resources.
He says Lax Kw’alaams traditional law, backed by science, make it clear that Flora Bank cannot be touched by the Petronas-backed LNG project or any other company that proposes development.
Reece says an alternate site will have to found if the project is to proceed.
