The Lax Kw’alaams Band has announced that it’ll seek an aboriginal title claim to Lelu Island and Flora Bank.
The area located in the Skeena River estuary is the proposed location of the Pacific NorthWest LNG terminal.
The Band says the title action is the first step in the establishment of existing aboriginal title to the land.
Mayor Garry Reece says once established, aboriginal title obligates government to seek the consent of the Lax Kw’alaams people for a project such as the Petronas Pacific North West LNG terminal.
The Band says it is opposed to the proposed location due to the threat it poses to the critical Skeena salmon habitat.
Reece also says while they allowed PNW to do some work while still under talks, the scope and scale of what’s actually happening wasn’t what they agreed to.
There will be a meeting on September 30th to update the community on the situation.
The title application will be submitted on Monday.
