The City of Prince Rupert is forging ahead with a plan to deal with some of the environmental hazards left over from World War II.
The move comes after a routine inspection revealed oil-contaminated rain water had leaked from one of the old bunker sea oil tanks in Moresby Park.
The city says the leak happened after a fallen tree caused a minor tear in the tank. Officials say the release was immediately caught and contained before there was any environmental impact.
The City of Prince Rupert says it’s notified the environment ministry and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans about the incident.
The tanks of bunker sea oil are a relic of the Second World War when the US Department of National Defense used Prince Rupert as a military outpost.
Mayor Lee Brain says it’s time to take action to get on top of longstanding issues in the community.
The City of Prince Rupert is putting out a request for proposals for decommissioning the oil tanks in Moresby Park.
