Some northwest B.C. patients may see elective eye surgery delays after the region’s only eye specialist announced he is taking a medical leave.
NDP Skeena MLA Robin Austin raised the issue during question period Thursday, calling it a crisis.
Northern Health Northwest Medical Director Dr. Geoff Appleton says Terrace-based ophthalmologist Dr. Tom Nagy is expected to be on leave for three months, but he says it shouldn’t have a huge impact.
Appleton admits that Dr. Nagy’s leave did happen rather quickly, but Northern Health is doing its best to fill any gaps.
Dr. Nagy is the only eye specialist located north of Prince George.
