The Cariboo Fire Centre says Friday night’s lightning activity sparked five new wildfires within its area.
The largest of the fires is four hectares located west of Anahim Lake. A three-person initial attack crew is on site with air tankers and a helicopter providing help from above. Sixteen additional firefighters are en route.
Initial attack crews are working three small fires in the Big Bar area and a small fire southwest of Quesnel. Air tankers helped out with one of the Big Bar area fies Friday night and crews are mopping up today.
Crews were able to get to the fires fast and keep them manageable thanks to reports from the public.
More thunderstorm activity is expected in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, but showers and cooler temperatures are also in the forecast.
