A locally penned letter campaigning for fairness in recreational fishing is making the rounds and landed itself in front of Terrace council yesterday.
The letter, which has already drawn high-profile backers in the community, including MLA Ellis Ross, requests a short catch and release Chinook salmon fishing season to help the industry recover its losses.
While Kermodei Tourism rep and letter author Brian Niska acknowledges that it may be too late for the request to go through, he does hope it lands them appeal from the DFO.
The letter will be presented to Minister Dominic LeBlanc with the ultimate goal of a split between ocean and river fishing.
Currently coastal communities are given more allowance when it comes to sport fishing than river-based communities.
Ultimately, Council decided not to support the letter, though they did support the overall theme and opted instead to pen their own letter.
