For the first time in over 4 decades, someone not named Alice Maitland will be the mayor of Hazelton.
Dennis Sterritt, a housing and infrastructure advisor for the Gitksan Government Commission, will end the 42 year streak for Maitland.
Maitland took the loss in stride though, saying she felt it was time for a younger, inteligent, and energetic voice to take over.
The long-time mayoral mainstay said the the results were not surprising and, while she has no set plans for the future, she intends to remain a positive force in the community.
Sterritt defeated Maitland by a final tally of 76-45.
