Man facing charges following standoff in Thornhill

A man is facing numerous charges following a stand off over the weekend in Thornhill.

Police say they were called around 4 a.m. Saturday morning with reports that a woman escaped from a man who was holding her against her will at a motel in Thornhill.

The man fled the scene before police arrived. They then found him a few hours later in the 3000 block of Highway 16 east and Frontage Road.

Terrace RCMP Constable Angela Rabut says the chase led them through Thornhill and eventually into a wooded area across from Paton Street.

Constable Rabut says after officers, including the police dog service, crossed a waist high creek, they eventually caught up to the man at the edge of the Skeena River.

She says he then threatened the officers with a knife.

Constable Rabut says 53-year-old Darcy Hurst is facing numerous charges for holding the woman against her will as well as, uttering threats, assault, sexual assault, assault with a weapon and extortion.

Police say they are continuing to ensure the woman involved remains safe.

Hurst remains in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Terrace RCMP.

Police are thanking Terrace Search and Rescue and BC Ambulance for their help.
