The mayor of a Haida Gwaii community calls ferry fare reductions in the NDP budget a step in the right direction.
Tuesday’s budget contained 15 per cent fare cut on non-major routes like the ferry between Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii.
Masset Mayor Andrew Merilees says the reduction will make a difference for people that need to travel on and off the islands.
Merilees says there are still issues around scheduling to make things even more convenient to islanders, but he’s pleased with the fare cut.
As of April 1, the reduction will save travellers over $60 on a single round trip fare during the peak season.
The provincial budget also restored the seniors’ discount.
