Masset mayor says there should be funding for on-going shore clean up

Yesterday the province announced the last round of funding has been released to local communities to clean up debris from a tsunami that hit Japan in 2011.

While the funding is welcomed, Masset Mayor Andrew Merilees says there should be funding to tackle on-going marine debris that washes ashore.

He says it’s unfortunate that it takes a massive event like a tsunami for the government to release funding for clean up efforts.

The $115,000 going to Haida Gwaii will pay for shore clean up efforts as well as on-going monitoring.
