Environmental assessment restoration
With Trudeau in the province all week, federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May thought this would be a good time to take up with him the promised restoration of environmental protections.
May joined prominent environmental activist David Suzuki along with President of the Union of BC Chiefs, Grand Chief Steward Phillip to call on the Prime Minister to keep his promises.
In Vancouver today May said “Stephen Harper’s destructive omnibus budget bills C-38 and C-45 led to this mess, and we are now urging the Liberals to keep their promise and introduce bold legislation this fall to re-envision Environmental Assessment for a new generation.”
First Nations are calling for a complete overhaul of the National Energy Board and a rework of the Navigation Protection Act to ensure automatic protections over all navigatable waters.
May says she supports Indigenous concerns about lack of consultation on issues affecting their rights, and she says if the Liberal government doesn’t do something now, those bills will remain largely in place.
