Metis in BC are one step closer to taking control over their own child welfare following a historic agreement.
The agreement between the Metis Nation of BC and the provincial government was signed today with the goal of transferring authority by 2021.
This means that Metis children will be able to grow up safely in their own communities and connected to their own culture.
Metis will gain the right to develop their own laws, policies, and practices which line up with their traditions.
Currently there are approximately 520 Metis children in the provincial child care system, and the goal of this agreement is to bring that number down.
