Metlakatla First Nation allowed to harvest cockle and butter clams

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has announced it has opened Area 4 for food, social and ceremonial harvesting of cockles and butter clams under agreement with the Metlakatla Band Council.

This opening is only for members of the Metlakatla First Nation and all harvesters must have a permit and report quantities to the band office.

The boundaries of the open area are also posted in the band office and are very specific.

The DFO reminds harvesters they must consult with the Metlakatla Fisheries program, and the black-tipped siphon must be removed on all butter clams in keeping with traditional methods.

The opening is due to recent acceptable biotoxin monitoring results.
