Mild weather has forced Canada Winter Games organizers to move speed skating events.
Long track speed skating was to take place at the outdoor ice oval in Prince George, but officials say the warmer than expected weather means the event will be moved to Fort St. John.
“We’ve exhausted all of our options here in Prince George. We’ve used all of our available tools. We’ve postponed to later in the week when the weather was supposed to be more favourable. We’ve moved our scheduled to earlier in the day to skate when it is coldest.” says Christina Chénard technical representative for Speed Skating Canada.
The 63 skaters will start competition indoors on Wednesday.
Officials say the move is the only real option to protect the safety of competitors.
