The mayor of Smithers says the layoff of 100 workers at the Huckleberry mine is not the news that his community wants to hear.
Taylor Bachrach says the company’s decision to suspend pit operations at the copper/molybdenum mine will be felt in Smithers, Houston, and Telkwa.
Bachrach says, like it or not, local economies are tied to the global economy and northern BC remains heavily reliant on natural resources.
The mayor says he will be on the phone today to gauge the potential impact commodity prices may have on other projects, including the Brucejack mine near Stewart.
Bachrach says as more people are able work from anywhere in the world, communities with a great quality of life can attract those people and build a more resiliant economy.
He says Smithers is very well positioned to do just that.
