Mining company New Gold Inc. has announced a $100,000 contribution to the Quesnel Dakelh Education and Training Society.
The society was recently formed by three Quesnel area First Nations (Nazko, Lhtako Dene, and Lhoosk’uz Dene) to support education, training, and employment of its members.
New Gold wants to develop the Blackwater Project, a proposed open pit gold and silver mine approximately 160 kilometres southwest of Prince George. The facility would create 60,000 tonnes of ore per day over its estimated 17-year life.
Interim CEO of the society Karsten Henriksen says the financial contribution from New Gold will allow them to move forward in strategic areas in a timely fashion.
The Dakelh Education and Training Society has also invited New Gold to serve on its board. Chief Lilliane Squinas of the Lhoosk’uz Dene says the importance of the society’s work cannot be understated.
Chief Clifford Lebrun of the Lhtako Dene says as they work toward the future, collaborative relationships with industry will be critical.
