MiningWatch Canada back in court pursuing charges in Mount Polley dam collapse

MiningWatch Canada says more than 25,000 people have endorsed a petition calling on Ottawa not to let those responsible for the biggest mine tailings breach in Canadian history off the hook.

The petition was presented outside court today in Williams Lake, where the mining watchdog has been trying to proceed with a private prosecution against the province and the Mount Polley Mining Corporation over the collapse of a tailings pond nearly three years ago.

It alleges the Fisheries Act was violated in August 2014 when the side of a tailings pond at the Mount Polley mine crumbled, sending 24-million cubic meters of waste and water into nearby rivers and lakes.
