More weather delays in the recovery of sunken tug near Bella Bella, Heiltsuk Nation calls on Prime Minister to visit

High winds and choppy waters hitting Bella Bella has stopped the recovery efforts of the sunken tug.

The Heiltsuk Nation On-Scene Commander Jess Housty says it’s difficult to sit there and do nothing.

Housty says they will be training residents in onshore cleanup in the mean time to ensure that they can take advantage of any good weather that comes.

She says they are inviting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to see the damage first hand.

Housty believes a visit from Prime Minister Trudeau will be a significant step in a nation-to-nation relationship.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau will visit Bella Bella on Sunday to see the scene.

He is the third federal minister to visit after Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dominic Leblanc and Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould toured the sunken tug last weekend.

Thursday marks three weeks since a tug and empty fuel barge went aground on the Seaforth Channel.
