Mothers Day 2016

Hi all;

I just got back from a 4-day trip to my hometown of Calgary.  It was an incredible time, but everytime I go home, I leave missing it and my family more and more.  The purpose of my trip this time around was to surprise my mother for Mother’s Day.  For the past 4 months I said NOTHING to friends and family back home, enlisting only the help of my Dad to pull of my big plan.

I flew into Calgary 3:30pm Mother’s Day, rented a car and drove the 30kms to Strathmore where my mom lives and works.  Of course along the way, I picked up a bouquet and a card.  My pre-visit plans included mailing her a Mother’s Day card and calling her Sunday morning from Terrace as I was getting ready to board the plane…just to throw her off in case she had any inkling that I was coming…she didn’t.

I was petrified.  A little backstory: My mom and I were estranged for about 25 years.  In the past year and a half we have begun rebuilding our relationship and working on improving things.  For me this trip was about letting her know how much our rebuild has meant to me and to let her know where I stood in terms of continuing our relationship.  Walking into her work with flowers in hand, knowing she had no clue I was even in the province, well…words simply cannot express what I was feeling.  My dad had my phone and videotaped the reunion…let’s just say the plan went off without a hitch.  We had an amazing 4 days together and have already started making plans for our next visit!

For the record, she lost it…but so did I!

I love you Mom <3

Feel free to comment on the video (my apologies for the quality…this was the first time my Dad held an iPhone…lol….Parents!!)
