MP Nathan Cullen wants moratorium on tanker traffic following tug and barge that ran aground near Bella Bella

Skeena Bulkely Valley MP Nathan Cullen says the tug boat and barge that went aground near Bella Bella shows the importance of a tanker traffic moratorium.

The tug boat that is now submerged, leaking diesel and the empty fuel barge ran aground Thursday morning on the Edge Reef in the Seaforth Channel.

Cullen says response times for spills need to be a lot better.

The Liberals promised a moratorium on tanker traffic along the North Coast in the campaign last year.

Texas based Kirby Offshore Marine owns the tug and barge and says they regret the incident and are working with all agencies to contain the spill.

Seven people were on board at the time and are now safe.

It will still be a few days until the full impact of the spill is known.
