Mt. Polley protester hurt during blockade

Protesters say one of their members was injured late yesterday during a confrontation at the gates of Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley Mine, northeast of Williams Lake.

Kanahus Manuel of the Secwepemc Women’s Warrior Society says members were marking the second anniversary of the collapse of a tailings pond at the mine and protesters had temporarily blockaded the mine entrance, allowing workers to leave but not re-enter.

According to Manuel, an employee of the mine tried to drive a truck through the blockade, injuring a woman who was treated and released from hospital.

Manuel says there are plans to press charges, and they’ll continue to protest Imperial Metals.

Imperial Metals vice president Steve Robertson says demonstrators left the site last evening and there was no interruption to mine operations.
