Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen pledges to re-open the border crossing between Stewart BC and Hyder Alaska to 24 hours a day.
In a statement, Cullen says an NDP government would reverse the 2015 decision to close the border crossing overnight.
He adds that the local economy, and public safety have been hurt by the overnight closure.
The Galina Durant, mayor of Stewart, supports the idea of a 24 hour border crossing, saying it jeopardizes the economy and safety.
The Customs and Immigration Union says any savings from the overnight closures are negligible compared to the compromise in safety.
Cullen says the overnight closures were instituted without consultation with the local communities involved.
